Lovie Smith is getting back to the NFL.
The previous Chicago Bears lead trainer has consented to an arrangement with the Houston Texans to become protective organizer under new lead trainer David Culley, as per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.
Smith joins the Texans following a five-year stretch as the lead trainer at the University of Illinois, where he accumulated a 17-39 record. His residency finished after a 2-5 season in 2020.
Before Illinois, Smith was the lead trainer of the Bears for nine seasons and held a similar job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for two seasons. He holds a 89-87 record as an expert mentor, featured by an outing to Super Bowl XLI in 2007 with the Bears.
Smith’s option adds a veteran mentor to the staff of Culley, the most seasoned first-time lead trainer in NFL history.
The Texans recruited Culley, a long-lasting aide under Kansas City Chiefs lead trainer Andy Reid, from the Baltimore Ravens, where he was partner lead trainer, passing game facilitator and wide beneficiaries mentor.
Inverse Smith will be hostile facilitator Tim Kelly, who was held from the staff of Bill O’Brien, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
