Facts about Tetralogy of Fallot – Congenital Heart Defects

Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF) is a congenital cyanotic defect that affects the normal blood flow through the heart due to a combination of four different abnormalities occurring during the development of the foetus in the womb during pregnancy. Around 5 in every 10,000 babies are born with the condition. Depending on the severity and symptoms, it can be treated surgically and further corrective procedures.

In most cases, causes behind such severe heart defects is hard to know, pointed out paediatric cardiologists at AMRI Hospitals. Congenital heart diseases usually occur due to the abrupt combination of genes or chromosomes, along with environmental factors and involvement of non-prescribed OTC medicines. Most children and adults diagnosed with ToF can lead a normal life, managed by regular medical follow-ups and certain physical restrictions.

Some underlying facts for the condition are:

  1. ToF is a bunch of simultaneous heart abnormalities

As the name suggests, Tetralogy of Fallot is a complex congenital heart defect leading with four significant components;

Ventricular Septal Defect- A condition defining a large hole in the septum or heart wall, which separates the lower chambers or ventricles of the heart. The septum is known as a barrier that prevents high oxygen blood from mixing with blood having low-oxygen levels, disrupting blood flow to the lungs

Pulmonary Stenosis– Narrowing of the pulmonary valve and main pulmonary artery that affects the normal blood flow of the heart to the lungs. In such conditions, the heart has to work harder to pump blood as the pathway is narrowed, resulting in deprivation of oxygen-rich blood in the body

• Defects in the aortic valve lead to enlargement and open it from both ventricles rather than only from the left ventricle. In this condition, the aortic valve changes the direction and gets upside, on top of the ventricular septal defect

• Presence of Ventricular Hypertrophy, which makes the muscular wall of the right ventricles thicker than normal

2. Considered as Rare Congenital Heart defect

Like all congenital heart defects, the exact cause of ToF is still unknown. Named after the physician who first discovered it in 1888, Tetralogy of Fallot occurs is noticed in almost 5 out of every 10,000 births, affecting both genders equally. Also, in 15% of cases, a specific genetic abnormality may be present that is associated with other defects, including cleft palate

3. Signs with Bluish Tint to the skin

ToF is widely known to be a severe birth defect linked with cyanosis, which is revealed by lack of oxygen in the baby’s heart. A bluish tint occurs around skin, lips and fingernails due to poor oxygen levels in blood, affecting overall health. Foetal echocardiograms may help in detecting the condition at an early stage, otherwise cyanosis gets progressively worse with time in some cases, if left undiagnosed

4. Involves Surgery as A treatment

surgeon corrective surgery can help in completely fixing ToF, involving closure of the ventricular septal defect, and relieving pulmonary stenosis. After a successful surgery, the overriding aorta is connected to the right left ventricle, and the thickening of the right ventricular lapses. Sometimes a temporary shunt is required to relieve cyanosis, if any issues are found that prevent surgery

5. Tetralogy of Fallot is a lifelong medical condition

With advancements in modern medicine, ToF has been treated with successful results. However, a person requires a life-long follow up with a cardiologist to ensure heart is in proper health and hs to take precautions as per the doctor’s advice. The survival rate of ToF cases has been increased due to surgical procedures.

Entrepreneur Sean Smutny talks about what the future promises for the Cannabis industry

In 1996, California became the first US state to legalize cannabis for medicinal use. It was a watershed moment in the history of the drug. Although historically, cannabis had been used across the world for its well-documented health benefits, in the US, it had long been criminalized and associated with deviants.

In 2016 the Golden State went one step further and also legalized the recreational use of cannabis. With more and more people using cannabis to ease depression, relieve anxiety, stabilize moods, and help with a host of health ailments, California based cannabis manufacturers, such as Truth Enterprises, cannot grow and distribute the magical weed quickly enough. We took some time out with Truth Enterprises co-founder Sean Smutny to discuss the future of the industry.

Q: Hi Sean, it doesn’t seem so long ago that it was a criminal offense to grow and distribute cannabis. Do you ever feel lucky you were born in the right place at the right time?

A: (Laughs!) Sure. I’m Cali born and bred and was about 11 when cannabis was first legalized. I’ve always been fascinated by the plant, and when my two good friends and I first heard that California was going to give out cultivation licenses, I took a huge risk, purchased a property, and hoped for the best. It paid off. I got my first license 15 years ago, and the company now owns multiple cannabis licenses in distribution, cultivation, and manufacturing.

Q: You formerly owned a clothing line (Rebellious Wealth) and graduated with a business degree from California State University. How much has that helped benefit Truth Enterprises?

A: Oh, massively. Because I work in an industry that was once illegal, people are still getting used to thinking of it in terms of a legitimate enterprise. There have always been many hurdles and obstacles to overcome, but the bottom line is that it’s a business like any other and the same rules apply. You have to remember alcohol was also once illegal in the States and now look at how much revenue it generates each year.

Q: So, the future is looking bright for the cannabis industry?

A: Oh, for sure. More and more US states have legalized cannabis, and the stigma surrounding the drug is slowly fading away. In fact, cannabis legalization is going global, and the CBD product market is getting stronger all the time. The rest of the world is becoming wise to what cannabis users have known for centuries – it’s a miracle plant that’s beneficial to your health, alleviates stress, and helps you relax. What’s not to like?

Victor Madu reveals his ambitious expansion plans for “For the Leaux” in 2021 and beyond

Even when a brand is flourishing, it’s important to always be hustling and working towards new heights. Victor Madu is the CEO of fashion brand For the Leaux, and he’s already sold over 20,000 products to customers in all 50 states and over 20 countries. However, he’s not done building his empire.

While it’s an incredibly successful brand, For the Leaux is still developing and changing. In addition to his work with his clothing brand, Victor Madu wants to help other fashion entrepreneurs thrive. “I want to open my own warehouse and distribution center,” he says. “It will help my brand develop, but also give up-and-coming clothing brands resources that are currently hard to find. I would have loved to have help like that when I started.” Madu is also passionate about competitive gaming, and he wants to build a competitive gaming community surrounding his clothing brand. “I want gamers like myself to be able to monetize their skills and earn from the things they love,” he says. “I think gaming fits very well with the aesthetic I have for my clothes and with my current customer base.” Many people urge Madu to open his own brick and mortar store for For the Leaux, but he doesn’t see that happening any time soon. “I don’t think 2020 is the right time to make that jump. I also don’t think it’s necessary to bring in that component right now. I’m perfectly happy operating my brand online.”

Of course, Madu wants to build up a broader customer base for his clothing brand. However, he doesn’t want to do so in a conventional way. Since he started his company, he hasn’t spent a dime on advertising. Instead, For the Leaux operates on social media with the help of brand ambassadors and rabid fans. “I’m passionate about creating a community,” he says. “I don’t want to draw people with gimmicks. I want to find people who share my mindset and love the look of our brand.” So far, this strategy has worked very well for him.

The potential for growth is one of the most important aspects of a brand. For the Leaux is currently on an upward trajectory and has some exciting things in the pipeline in the coming months.

Trailblazers – eCommerce Expert Raymond Scott Jr. shares his successful dropshipping journey

Whether a college education is essential in business or not will be debated for years to come. There are, however, several successful entrepreneurs who dropped out of college and have gone on to prove that building a successful business may have nothing to do with a degree. Ray Scott is one such entrepreneur who built a successful e-commerce business even after dropping out of college.

Ray attended Norfolk State University as an IT major but did not finish his four years in school. After dropping out, Ray decided to pursue his entrepreneurship dreams. He started this in 2014 by having people complete CPA offers on the ProjectPayDay website. After making $4000 in that first venture, Ray decided to focus entirely on e-commerce and started selling advertising space on marketing platforms.

At that time, Ray was working at the Navy Federal Credit Union. He decided to launch his own store as an Amazon Seller in 2016 to substitute his salary from the credit union to focus on his business. He was successful with the Amazon store, making $100k sales in just six months. In less than a year, he was consistently making hundreds of thousands in gross sales each month.

Spurred on by this success, Ray launched Superior Dropshipping, a platform where he could help aspiring entrepreneurs build, scale, and manage their Amazon seller accounts. His dedication has helped him develop and manage over 400 accounts, making consistent profits each month.

Being a college dropout comes with a negative connotation. Still, Ray’s determination to turn that into a positive pushed him to give his all in his business, often working for more than 16 hours each day of the week to see his entrepreneurship dreams come true.

While he does not advocate for dropping out of college, Ray Scott has proved that struggling in academics may be the universe’s way of showing you that you perhaps need to pursue a different path in life, just like he did.

In Conversation with Big Clout Media’s Founder Erick Alvarez

Fitness isn’t just a physical attribute, it’s a state of mind. The fitness industry has grown to reflect this in the last decade, with key players such as LA Fitness and LifeTime leading the way in a marketplace which is worth billions.

Entrepreneur Erick Alvarez knows all about the philosophy of being fit, it’s what transformed him from a college dropout, prone to drinking alcohol and reckless behavior, into a highly-sought after personal trainer and CEO and founder of Big Clout Media. Erick kindly agreed to share with us a few of his insights about the evolution and future of the industry he cares passionately about.

Q: You’re a living example of a person who was literally saved by fitness. How does this have a bearing on what you do today?

A: Quite simply it’s the driving philosophy behind everything I do. Through fitness I managed to become the best version of myself I could possibly be and I feel it’s my life calling to help others do the same. I went from a depressed and anxious college kid, to a globetrotting entrepreneur. Fitness was the key.

Q: You’re hailed as something of a revolutionary in the industry because you were one the first to identify how the internet could transform fitness. Can you elaborate?

A: I was in Medellin, Columbia for a fitness expo when you could say I had something of an epiphany. I saw that being a personal trainer in the flesh was a worn and relatively stale concept in the digital age. I decided then and there to move my business online and create multiple fitness brands, and that’s the genesis of Big Clout Media.

Q: Tell us a little more about how the process works?

A: In a nutshell we partner with fitness influencers. We then assist them in building and enhancing their current influence and help create their own fitness business. We monetize their influence by helping them brand, market and sell their own digital products. We take care of everything from product creation, branding, sales, marketing, scaling, hiring and managing the team. Big Clout Media essentially helps influencers garner strong earnings, with a done-for-you business approach. WIth my skillset and the authority of influencers, it’s a perfect match. It allows the influencers to focus on what they love, and help millions of people worldwide achieve their fitness goals. It’s a winning formula which I believe to be the future of the entire industry.

Mental Resilience during COVID 19 – A short article by Adrian Goh Guan Kiong

The outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has become a source of stress and adversity for a lot of people.

We all need resilience to get through this. Resilience will help us all overcome the difficulties of these times. But not many of us have tough mental attitudes as resilience isn’t something we’re born with. Resilience is built over some time.

Our resilience level depends on how our experiences interact with the unique individual genetic makeup we are composed of. That’s why the way we react or respond to stress and adversity is different.

Consider resilience to be a balance scale or a seesaw. In this case, a negative experience pushes the seesaw towards negative results and positive experiences take it towards good results. So, in the post-COVID-19 world, one needs resilience to survive the changing times.

In this article, let me share with you how to develop mental resilience and thrive in these uncertain times.

5 ways to build mental resilience

The following are simple, yet effective ways to develop a tough character to withstand the adversity of the post COVID era.

1. Self-monitor

The first way to develop mental resilience is to check in with yourself. Understand what stresses you, and possibly, avoid them. Some people keep a journal or a log of what gets them stressed. In this journal, you should list the emotions you feel, and the situations that make you feel this way. Having identified these, you wouldn’t react indecisively anymore. You simply determine what path is best to take to help you avoid or manage the stressor.

2. Acceptance

A lot has changed for every one of us, and in such a short time too. Neither of us had any control over all that has happened, so dwelling on these changes or resenting them would do you no good. Simply, accept these changes, by altering your practices to get the most of where you currently are. Of course, you are not responsible for the current situation, you are only responsible for how you react to it. So, build on where you are, and move on.

3. Create a schedule

Covid-19 has destabilized our regular schedules -every one of us. Consequently, it is hard for many to adjust, and readjust. It is up to you to determine what is required of you each day, week, or month, and then make a plan to accomplish them.

You may have to break larger tasks, into small, easily achievable tasks. If your to-do list is packed, choose the most important tasks first, before those that are not as important. This way, you get the most pressing tasks done and you beat procrastination as well.

4. Physical distance, do not social distance

Of course, as medical advice goes, the best way to stay away from Covid-19 is to stay around 1 meter away from the nearest person who isn’t in your immediate household. I think that should be called physical distancing, not social distancing. Social distancing cuts us off and wears us down. If you are working from home, reach out to your coworkers on the various social platforms or groups you belong or even over video calls. Discuss with your friends and keep in touch regularly. Do these frequently, and don’t forget to help those who are unable to go out for food or groceries.

5. Be optimistic

While this might sound too simplistic, people with optimistic views maintain a higher level of mental resilience. Optimism reduces anxiety and depression -and this can help overcome thoughts that lead to spiraling.

Do not forget to get rid of toxic stressors and also get involved in physical activities. Improved physical health helps improve your mental health too.
