Meta has officially announced the rollout of Passkeys for Facebook, aiming to simplify and enhance the security of the sign-in process for mobile users. This new feature allows users to access their accounts without the need for conventional passwords. Instead, Passkeys use secure digital credentials, relying on stored biometric data such as fingerprints, facial recognition, or a device PIN to authenticate identity and grant account access on compatible apps and websites.
According to Meta, this security upgrade will first be made available on iOS and Android devices for Facebook users, with plans to extend the same feature to Messenger in the near future. Interestingly, once Passkeys are activated on Facebook, the same login credentials will automatically be valid for Messenger when the functionality becomes available, ensuring a seamless and unified experience across Meta platforms.
Passkeys offer a considerable improvement over traditional login methods like passwords and one-time verification codes received via SMS. Meta emphasized that these digital credentials, developed under the FIDO Alliance’s security framework, are highly resistant to common online threats such as phishing attacks, scam links, and password guessing. By eliminating the need for passwords entirely, Passkeys help users sidestep the vulnerabilities typically associated with password management and security breaches.
Beyond securing account logins, Meta highlighted that Passkeys will also enable additional convenience features within the Meta ecosystem. For instance, when using Meta Pay, Passkeys can autofill payment details, making transactions faster and more secure without compromising user data.
The steps of creating a Passkey for Facebook is meant to be simple. Once the feature goes live, users will receive a prompt upon opening the Facebook or Messenger apps, guiding them through a quick setup involving a fingerprint scan, face scan, or PIN entry. Those who miss the initial prompt can activate Passkeys later by navigating to Settings, selecting Accounts Centre, and then heading to the Password and Security section to find the Passkey option.
With this new feature, Meta takes a meaningful step toward replacing outdated, vulnerable login systems with modern, secure, and user-friendly alternatives.
