Spotify has officially rolled out an important update for iPhone users in the U.S., allowing them to view subscription prices and pay outside Apple’s ecosystem—something that wasn’t possible for nearly a decade. The move comes right after a major court ruling requiring Apple to let app developers link to external payment methods without incurring Apple’s usual commission.
On May 3, Spotify confirmed that Apple has greenlit the update, marking a big step toward more open app payment practices. “This is a win for consumers, artists, and creators,” said Jeanne Moran, a Spotify spokesperson. “We can now show users clear pricing and give them direct links to manage their subscriptions outside of Apple’s payment system.”
This change means more than just a new app version—it’s a turning point. With Apple’s 30% fee no longer standing in the way, Spotify says it can now offer better prices and give users more freedom when it comes to managing their accounts.
What’s New in the Update?
Version 9.0.40 of the Spotify app is now live on the App Store. After installing it, users can see all subscription options along with their prices right within the app. Even better, if you decide to upgrade or change your plan, the app will now direct you to Spotify’s own website—letting you bypass Apple’s fees entirely.
The update also allows Spotify to highlight time-limited deals and special promotions directly in the app, something Apple previously restricted. This brings more transparency to users and makes comparing plans far simpler.
Spotify reportedly submitted the update just one day before it was approved, making it one of the first major platforms to take advantage of the new developer rights.
Apple’s Legal Battle Isn’t Over Yet
While Apple has approved the update for now, the tech giant has made it clear it isn’t happy with the ruling. The company announced plans to appeal the U.S. court’s decision, despite stating it would comply in the meantime.
The court found that Apple had knowingly violated a previous order by continuing to block developers from directing users to outside payment options. U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ruled that Apple had acted deliberately to maintain control over in-app transactions, harming competition in the process.
A New Era for App Developers and Users
Spotify’s move sets a precedent for other app developers looking to offer more flexible and user-friendly payment options. As more platforms follow suit, users could soon enjoy more competitive pricing, better deals, and increased control over how and where they pay for services.
While the legal fight between Apple and developers is far from over, this moment is a major victory for user rights and transparency in the mobile app world.
