Apple Maps is taking a significant step forward by introducing expert ratings and reviews from respected industry sources, aiming to set itself apart from Google Maps. This update focuses on providing users with high-quality insights rather than relying solely on crowdsourced feedback.

Initially launching in the United States, the update brings a major enhancement to how users discover restaurants. A key highlight is the integration of the Michelin Guide’s renowned star rating system. This allows users to easily identify restaurants that have earned one, two, or three Michelin stars, known globally as symbols of culinary excellence. In addition to the classic stars, Apple Maps will also display Michelin Green Stars for environmentally conscious dining spots and Bib Gourmand labels for establishments offering exceptional food at reasonable prices. These markers make it easier for users to choose based on their dining preferences and values, such as sustainability or affordability.

Although Apple Maps was originally designed for use on iPhones and iPads, access has gradually broadened. Users can now view the service through mobile browsers by visiting maps.apple.com, making it more accessible to non-Apple devices, though a dedicated Android or Windows app still does not exist. It remains uncertain whether the web version will display the full range of new features.

The update extends beyond food to hotels as well. Apple Maps will now feature the Michelin Key award, which highlights hotels recognized for outstanding service and quality. Travelers can filter searches to quickly find top-rated lodging options that align with their preferences.

For golf enthusiasts, Apple will soon integrate Golf Digest ratings, offering expert rankings and insights to help users select the best courses. Though not yet available, this addition will provide golf players with detailed information and guidance based on professional reviews.

Advanced search filters are also part of the update, allowing users to refine results by Michelin awards or sustainability credentials. Additionally, curated guides from each partnered organization will provide more context beyond simple star ratings.

Some hotels will now support direct booking through Apple Maps, simplifying the reservation process. Apple also plans to introduce direct booking options for restaurants and golf tee times in the near future, further streamlining the user experience.

The rollout of these new features begins in the United States, with expansion to other countries planned for later.
