Gemini’s attempts to condense emails will be much more visible to Google Workspace users. Complex thread summaries are now automatically generated by Gmail and will show up above the emails.

Since last year, Google Workspace accounts have included AI-powered email summaries; but, up until now, you had to manually initiate them. Rather than requesting “longer email threads or messages with several replies,” Google’s AI will now determine when a summary could be useful on its own. As fresh responses are received, email thread summaries will be updated.

The automated summaries will now show up above emails in English, but only on mobile devices. It could take up to two weeks for them to show up in your account. Whether or when the capability will be extended to Gmail users without premium Workspace accounts or to Gmail on desktop has not been disclosed by Google.

You may still ask Gmail to provide an AI summary, just like you can now, even if it doesn’t do it automatically. Additionally, you may disable all of Gmail’s AI capabilities by disabling “Smart features” in the app’s settings if you would prefer not to see them at all.
