A24 has officially confirmed the long-circulating rumors: acclaimed filmmaker Alex Garland is set to write and direct a live-action adaptation of Elden Ring. This cinematic venture will be a collaboration between A24 and video game publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc., bringing one of the most celebrated modern fantasy RPGs to the big screen.

This announcement comes hot on the heels of Garland’s latest A24 project, Warfare, a gritty Iraq war film co-directed with Ray Mendoza. The film has already amassed over $32 million globally since its theatrical debut last month, further cementing Garland’s reputation for compelling, thought-provoking storytelling. Industry veterans Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, and Allon Reich of DNA Films, along with George R. R. Martin and Vince Gerardis, will produce the Elden Ring movie. This is an amazing combination that combines their knowledge of both literature and filmmaking.

Originally released in February 2022 to overwhelming critical acclaim, Elden Ring is a rich, dark fantasy action RPG developed by FromSoftware under the visionary direction of Hidetaka Miyazaki. The game’s lore and world-building were crafted in part by George R. R. Martin, the renowned writer of the A Song of Ice and Fire books that served as the basis for Game of Thrones on HBO. Set in the mythical Lands Between, Elden Ring invites players to explore vast open-world environments and intricately designed dungeons teeming with danger, secrets, and powerful adversaries. To date, more than 30 million copies of the game have been shipped worldwide. A follow-up title, Elden Ring: Nightreign, is scheduled to launch globally on May 30.

Garland’s history with A24 includes four of his five directorial efforts – Ex Machina, Men, Civil War, and Warfare – with Annihilation being the lone exception, released through Paramount. In parallel, he’s currently working on a new zombie trilogy for Sony, 28 Years Later, alongside original collaborators Danny Boyle and DNA Films. Garland, whose creative partnership with DNA began with 2002’s 28 Days Later, is represented by WME and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman.
