Microsoft’s Windows Notepad software will now support text formatting. For Canary and Dev Channel testers on Windows 11, the noteworthy Notepad update adds bold and italic styling, hyperlinks, and even support for Markdown.

Along with the already-existing File, Edit, and View choices, Notepad now has a formatting toolbar at the top of the program due to the addition of text formatting. In addition to supporting lists and headings, the toolbar gives users access to bold, italic, and hyperlink choices.

Dave Grochocki, principal product manager lead for Microsoft’s Windows inbox apps, says, “For users who prefer to work directly with the lightweight markup language, the experience supports Markdown style input and files.” “You can use the view menu or the toggle button in the status bar at the bottom of the window to switch between formatted Markdown and Markdown syntax views.”

Since Notepad is typically used for plain text, you may also quickly remove all formatting from the app’s edit menu or formatting toolbar. You can even completely turn off this new functionality in the Notepad app settings if you don’t like the lightweight formatting options.

Only a week has passed since Microsoft began testing a new Notepad feature that uses artificial intelligence to create text for you. This formatting addition follows that function. Notepad’s new Write tool allows users to “quickly draft text based on your prompt,” and with these formatting possibilities, Notepad is beginning to resemble Microsoft Word more and more.

It’s incredible that Notepad has evolved from a simple log file reader to a message writing tool when Microsoft hardly modified it for decades. Since Microsoft decided to eliminate WordPad from Windows after over 30 years, Notepad has gained a number of new functionality.
