Disney Reaches a Later Release Date for the Live-Action Film Moana

Disney has formally postponed the Moana live-action film’s theatrical release date. Dwayne Johnson has stated that the film will start production later this year. The remake was supposed to hit theatres on June 27, 2025, but it was postponed for a full year and will instead debut on July 10, 2026.

Tony Award winner Thomas Kail will helm the live-action Moana film, in which Johnson will play Maui. Produced under the Seven Bucks Productions banner by Dwayne Johnson, Dany, and Hiram Garcia, with Beau Flynn for Flynn Picture Co. Auli’i Cravalho and Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co. are its executive producers. Producer of the original Moana, Jared Bush, will collaborate with Samoan industry veteran Dana Ledoux Miller on the remake.

Moana will also received an animated sequel

Just in time for this year’s Thanksgiving holiday, Disney is set to release the much awaited animation follow-up to 2016’s Moana on November 27 in addition to the live-action film. David G. Derrick Jr. is both the director and writer of the sequel, which will once again include Johnson and Auliʻi Cravalho in their respective roles as Moana and Maui.

John Musker and Ron Clements directed the original. In addition to earning nearly $600 million in revenue, the film was well-received by critics and was nominated for two Oscars, including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.
