The Camera and UI are fixed in the January Update for Pixel Phones that Qualify

As we recently noted, it appears that Google has reverted to its original plan to provide its monthly updates on the first Monday of each month. The first update of the year for Pixel phones that qualify—the Pixel 5a, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel Fold, Pixel Tablet, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro—was only released today by Google due to the fact that this Monday was a holiday (New Year’s Day).

According to Google, “the January 2024 update includes bug fixes and improvements for Pixel users.” An update to the camera app for all qualifying Pixel phones, including the Pixel Fold, is included in the list. This update prevents the cameras on these Pixel devices from crashing under specific circumstances.

The User Interface is the focus of the final three fixes. One will address a problem that results in customers seeing a flashing black screen when watching video in specific scenarios for the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Users of Pixel Tablets will only need one bug fix to resolve an issue that occasionally stopped them from leaving SetupWizard. Lastly, a fault that occasionally caused the home screen background to turn black was fixed for owners of the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, and Pixel Fold. Security patch levels 2024-01-01 and 2024-01-05 are included in the update. Pixel users should navigate to Settings > System > System Update in order to install the update.

The December Pixel Feature Drop, also known as Android 14 QPR1 (Quarterly Platform Release), was followed by the minor January update. Another significant Pixel Feature Drop (Android 14 QPR2) is anticipated to be published in March, probably on March 4th, following the next Pixel 14 update, which is anticipated to be delivered on Monday, February 5.
