A career change can be one of the most impactful decisions of a person’s life. Although making the jump is challenging and nerve-wracking, the shift almost always results in happiness. Sports journalist Emily Austin recently underwent one of these herself, and she couldn’t be happier with the results.
Emily Austin started her career as a model and actress. She’s done fashion shoots for many popular brands and magazines. On the acting front, she has played featured roles in the films An American Pickle and Isn’t It Romantic. Her most exciting achievement is being featured on a billboard in Times Square, modeling for Klass Kulture’s brand. “I love putting myself out there and playing a role,” says Austin. “I’m grateful for my time working in the industry, as it’s given me a lot of guidance in my new profession.” At the age of 19, she has already decided that she wants to explore something new. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Austin began hosting her own sports show called ‘Daily Vibes With’ on her Instagram and YouTube channel. She brings on big sports stars and chats with them about their lives and their profession. Some of her most notable guests include Mitchell Robinson from the New York Knicks, Ben McLemore from the Houston Rockets, NFL player Zach Banner, and many more. “I feel passionate every time I’m in an interview. I love asking questions and getting to learn more about a person.”
Austin chose this career in the sports industry because she is familiar with it. She played tennis in high school and considered continuing it in college. However, she ultimately decided to focus on her studies. “I think having played tennis gives me a better insight into the people I interview. I understand the love of the game.” She recently modeled for a commercial on the Tennis Channel, showing off her skills. While she has gained attention for her work in sports journalism, she won’t completely take modeling or acting in the future off the table. “I’m a complex person, and I can do a lot of different things. I don’t see why I can’t walk a runway and hold a mic at the same time.”
Sports journalism can be a hard industry to break into, especially for a woman. Emily Austin can’t wait to keep cultivating her perspective and showing the guys that she belongs.
